FourFour does not provide email accounts that use your own official domain name (ex. firstname.lastname@example.org). This is because there are many excellent options already available to you. We recommend using Google Apps. Google offers a free, ad-supported Standard Edition or a paid Premium Edition. To learn more, go to http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/business/editions.html.
REGISTER YOUR OWN DOMAIN NAME
If you haven't done so already, now's the time to register your official domain name (ex. bandname.com). You do that using services provided by a domain registration company ("domain name registrar"), such as GoDaddy. Click here to register your domain name with GoDaddy.
SETUP GOOGLE APPS FOR EMAIL (AND MORE)
We suggest you start by signing up for the free Standard Edition. To do so, go to http://www.google.com/a/cpanel/domain/new.
You can use an existing domain name or register a new one using one of Google's domain name registrar partners. If you already have an official domain name and want to use it, then select the "Administrator" radio button. Enter your domain name. Click the "Get Started" button. Fill-in the registration form and then click the "Continue" button. Create your administrator account by filling in the form. Click the "I accept, Continue with set up" button. You will land on the Google Apps start page for the Standard Edition.
You must now verify ownership. Below the main horizontal menu at the top, you will see "To activate Google Apps services you must verify that you own your domain - domain.com." Click on the "Verify domain ownership" link that follows this sentence.
You can verify ownership using one of two methods: 1) by uploading an HTML file or 2) by changing your CNAME record. To learn more about these methods and how to verify ownership, go to http://www.google.com/support/a/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=60216.
If you have not upgraded to "Go Official" and changed your DNS records to point your domain name to FourFour.com, and you have an active web hosting account for the domain name, you can use either one of the two methods. ** IMPORTANT ** However, if you have already changed your DNS records to point your domain name to FourFour.com, then you MUST use the "change CNAME record" method. (After completing the above steps, it may take up to 48 hours for Google to complete verification - but is usually much quicker.)
You should now activate your email. On the start page, underneath the "Email" link and icon is a link for "Activate Email". Click on the "Activate Email" link. Select the domain name registrar you use from the drop-down list (ie GoDaddy) and follow the detailed instructions. Update your MX Records according to the instructions provided. When all of the new MX Records have been added and they are all active, click on the "I have completed these steps" button. (Again, it may take up to 48 hours for Google to complete activation - but is usually much quicker.)
That's it. Take time to explore Google Apps to learn more about how to add Users, to change the URL used to access your email to mail.yourdomain.com, etc.
