Girls on Film Inks Distribution Deals with Stickfigure Records and PaterNoster

Soulow Records recording artist, Girls on Film, has gained a US distribution deal with StickFigure to distribute their third studio recording, the Mental Image EP, which was released September 30, 2009.

Based in Atlanta, StickFigure started during the winter of 1992 to cater to the underground scene of independent music. Its roots were in the new sub-culture rising in the 90s. Now one of the Southeast’s leading indie distribution companies, it works with underground indie-rock labels from around the country to build a catalogue of Alternative, Eclectic, Experimental, Indie, Punk and Rock music that is typically difficult to find at record stores. StickFigure is run by Gavin Frederick, who was formerly a radio DJ for 91.1 WREK (Georgia Tech). Through StickFigure, the Girls also landed a deal with PaterNoster to have the Mental Image EP promoted and distributed in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

“We are so excited about these two partnerships,” stated bassist, Kazhmir. “Working with StickFigure and PaterNoster will make it much easier for people to get our EP in the US and Canada, as well as across the two ‘ponds’.”

The Girls traveled to Malibu the Summer of 2008 to record the EP with legendary producer, Geza X (best known for his work on Meredith Brooks’ hit, “Bitch”, as well as many early and influential LA punk bands including the Dead Kennedys, The Germs, Black Flag, and The Avengers), and Paul Roessler of Screamers, Twisted Roots, and 45 Grave.

The 9-song EP is chock full of memorable hooks and perfectly exhibits the band’s new-wave inspired sound that straddles the line between retro and postmodern. It also features several remixes by high-profile artists including Macutchi, Mike Lange and DJ F. Song themes cover such topics as unrealized love, obsession, and self-doubt, but lead singer, Rio’s, carefully calculated lyrics are sharp shooting and sophisticated. The EP’s two singles, “Pitiless Friend” and “Metrosexual”, feature the driving rhythms, icy synth-wave hooks, and quirky vocals for which Girls on Film have become known.

Over the last few years, Florida’s Girls on Film have polished their signature sound, “Dancetronic Glam Wave,” the fashion-fueled combination of high-energy stage antics and synthpop beats that have made the band’s live show a must-see in the Southeast since their inception in 2002.

Within the last 2 years, the Girls have seen several songs from previous releases licensed for various film and TV projects including commercial spots on the AMC TV Network promoting the movie, “Working Girl”, as well as “Honey Nut Cheerios”, in addition to airplay on MTV Italia and inclusion in the documentary, “Liquid Vinyl”.

Overall, the Mental Image EP combines a rhythmic, sensual whiff of nostalgia with progressive ideas and is a surprisingly modern-sounding album that brings a rock-and-roll attitude back to dance music. The new partnerships with StickFigure and PaterNoster will serve to bring Girls on Film’s unique brand of glam wave to newer and wider audiences.
